Low Back pain
More than half of us will have back pain
in any given year. It causes lost productivity, much disability and
suffering and the effects on people’s lives are very far reaching. Back
pain is simply one of the most common reasons for absenteeism from work
and a major reason for visiting a medical doctor who, unfortunately,
often feels frustrated as all he can do is medicate to alleviate
symptoms.
Neck Pain
Neck and/or shoulder pain
affects many people at any age. It is a major reason for lost
productivity and absenteeism from work and for many it leads to
headaches, arthritis and other health complications. There
can be many causes of neck and shoulder pain, ranging from poor
posture, repetitive strain injuries or traumatic injury, to more
complicated conditions such as spinal arthritis, degenerating discs or
trapped nerves causing pain and dysfunction in the arms or even to
important organs that have nerve supply from the neck.
Sciatic Pain (or Pain down the leg)
Sciatic pain is caused when the sciatic
nerves are irritated and a flare-up can result in lower back pain,
burning, cramping or numbness that radiates into the thighs, legs,
ankles, feet and toes. This occurs when the important nerves are
irritated or pinched as they leave the spine in the low back. This can
be an indication of a serious and worsening condition that can become
quite disastrous for your health as nerves become more compressed.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a spinal abnormality that is
characterized by a twisting of the spine. It is measured as a degree
of curvature as seen on X-Ray from the front. Scoliosis occurs
most frequently in girls and usually appears during childhood. It can
be detected by uneven shoulder heights, a loss of structural balance or
a change in posture. Often one shoulder blade will be more prominent
than the other.
Slipped Discs / Disc Herniation
The discs are very sensitive structures
that act as cushions or shock absorbers to resist the forces of gravity
on the spine and they also allow you to bend. They contain many nerves
which are there for us to control movement and posture and importantly
to protect the delicate spinal cord and nerve roots. If the discs
are injured possibly through poor posture, degenerative changes, or as
a result of trauma, they can tear. This causes terrible pain,
disability, numbness, tingling, and pain down the legs or arms.
